OUR CHURCH FAMILY

We extend our sympathy to Lawrn VanderKlipp and his family in the death of his dear wife, Donna. The service to celebrate her life will be held Saturday, October 28, 10 AM at Westend. Visitation will be Friday from 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Alt Shawmut on Lake Michigan Drive and 9-10 AM Saturday at church.

BANNER

Five hundred years ago, Martin Luther nailed 95 thesis, written in Latin, to a church door, which started the Reformation. The banner shows the consolidation of these Latin thesis which Protestants still believe: Sola Scriptural – Scripture alone; Sola Fide – Faith alone; Solo Christo – Christ alone; Sola Gratia – Grace alone; and Soli Deo Gloria – Glory to God alone. It distinguishes us from other religions as well as cults.

The fellowship center banner is a quote from Philip Melanchthon who was a Protestant Reformation theologian and who systematized Luther’s ideas. It still is very applicable today.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

November 1 will be our International Potluck Community Dinner to kick off Mission Emphasis week! Please sign up to bring your doro wat, risotto, quesadillas, kugel, kimchi, oliebollen, or french fries.

If you send mail to Ken Blake, here are some updates to their mail regulations:

  • All envelopes will be discarded. Be sure to include Ken’s name, ID number, and your return address on the mail itself.
  • Mail may only be in black or blue ink or lead pencil.
  • No labels, stickers, or embellishments.

It’s time again to make shoebox gifts for Operation Christmas Child. The boxes are distributed around the world along with a booklet of Bible stories in the local language. We ask all families of children from 3s & 4s through grade 5 (or anyone else) to put together a shoebox, and bring it to church by November 12. Go to www.samaritanspurse.org/what-we-do/operation-christmas-child/ for details or grab a flyer from the back of church.

Bulletin 9-24-17

September 24, 2017

TODAY

This morning our guest preacher is Seminarian Andrea Bult, whose message Dependent People, Dependable God, is from Exodus 16. During the service Ruby Jean Swinkels, daughter of Karissa and Reuben, will be baptized, and we will hear a mission update from Christie VanKuiken.

NEXT SUNDAY

Next Sunday our guest preacher will be Rev Dan Ackerman. We will celebrate Communion next Sunday, and during the service Josslyn Kate Marsh, daughter of Jennifer and DJ, will be baptized.

Our opportunities for giving will be for the Ministries Fund and Faith Promise.

OUR CHURCH FAMILY

We offer our sympathy to the Broene family in the death of their dear mother, grandmother, and great-grandma, Carol Broene, on Tuesday.

We also extend sympathy to Jamison and Kristen Worst in the death of Kristen’s grandmother, Caroline Kreuze.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Cadets are going on a camp-out September 29-30. Please have your boys at church that Friday at 5 PM. Don’t forget to turn in your permission slip.

Is your birthday in October? If so, you are asked to bring some cookies to help us celebrate – well, to eat after church. Cookies may be left in the main kitchen and labeled Coffee Time. Thanks.

Volunteers are needed to help at future Westend Wednesday Community Dinners. A sign up sheet is in the fellowship center.

The Ladies’ Thursday afternoon Bible study will have their first meeting October 5 at 1:30 in the Café. Pastor Bob will be our leader again. We have some lessons in Isaiah yet. If you have questions, call Alma.

Do you love kids and want to help young families continue meeting? A small group is looking for two volunteers to watch their kids (infant – 5 years) in the nursery the first Thursday of each month. Time is 5:30-8:00 and includes dinner! If you are willing to help, please contact Jennifer.

Fall = Fun! Westend Fall Fest Lite is happening this year at Ben and Judy Meyer’s home on Saturday, October 7, at 6 PM. Ben will have the cider mill running, as well as the tractor for hay rides. We’ll also have store-bought cider, Moelker’s donuts, a campfire, and snacks. Bring a Frisbee or outdoor game if you’d like, or just hang out by the fire and enjoy family fun and fall revelry!

Pick-up basketball starts again Saturday, October 14. We play at West Side’s gym from 8-10 AM most Saturdays. Most players are men in their 20s-40s, but anyone middle school and up is welcome. There is a facebook group for weekly communication. If interested, contact Jamison Worst.

Save the date. Flu shots will be available in the Café on October 11, 10-11 AM.

The Emergency Medical Team asks that anyone with a medical or first aid background contact Julie Bulson.

Mark your calendar for Safe Church training to be held here at Westend on October 26 at 7 PM. Anyone who helps with Westend’s children and hasn’t had the training in the last three years should attend.

Costume jewelry is again being collected for MCFS. Feel free to clean out your jewelry box, and put donations in the box on the table near the mailboxes. Please do so by Thanksgiving.

YOUTH

JRock

  • We meet next Sunday at 3:45.

  • Reserve October 13-14 for an overnight retreat at Hoekzema’s cottage in Cadillac. We will leave from church that Friday at 9 PM and return Saturday at 4 PM. Cost is $10.

  • We meet this evening, 6-8 PM. Join us for the lesson King Me! and examine the importance that a Christian foundation makes in today’s culture.

  • Save October 28 for our next activity.
