This morning our guest preacher is Seminarian Andrea Bult, whose message Dependent People, Dependable God, is from Exodus 16. During the service Ruby Jean Swinkels, daughter of Karissa and Reuben, will be baptized, and we will hear a mission update from Christie VanKuiken.

 

NEXT SUNDAY

 

Next Sunday our guest preacher will be Rev Dan Ackerman. We will celebrate Communion next Sunday, and during the service Josslyn Kate Marsh, daughter of Jennifer and DJ, will be baptized.

We offer our sympathy to the Broene family in the death of their dear mother, grandmother, and great-grandma, Carol Broene, on Tuesday.

 

We also extend sympathy to Jamison and Kristen Worst in the death of Kristen’s grandmother, Caroline Kreuze.

 

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

The Cadets are going on a camp-out September 29-30. Please have your boys at church that Friday at 5 PM. Don’t forget to turn in your permission slip.

Volunteers are needed to help at future Westend Wednesday Community Dinners. A sign up sheet is in the fellowship center.

 

The Ladies’ Thursday afternoon Bible study will have their first meeting October 5 at 1:30 in the Café. Pastor Bob will be our leader again. We have some lessons in Isaiah yet. If you have questions, call Alma.

 

Do you love kids and want to help young families continue meeting? A small group is looking for two volunteers to watch their kids (infant – 5 years) in the nursery the first Thursday of each month. Time is 5:30-8:00 and includes dinner! If you are willing to help, please contact Jennifer.

 

Fall = Fun! Westend Fall Fest Lite is happening this year at Ben and Judy Meyer’s home on Saturday, October 7, at 6 PM. Ben will have the cider mill running, as well as the tractor for hay rides. We’ll also have store-bought cider, Moelker’s donuts, a campfire, and snacks. Bring a Frisbee or outdoor game if you’d like, or just hang out by the fire and enjoy family fun and fall revelry!

 

Pick-up basketball starts again Saturday, October 14. We play at West Side’s gym from 8-10 AM most Saturdays. Most players are men in their 20s-40s, but anyone middle school and up is welcome. There is a facebook group for weekly communication. If interested, contact Jamison Worst.

 

Save the date. Flu shots will be available in the Café on October 11, 10-11 AM.

 

The Emergency Medical Team asks that anyone with a medical or first aid background contact Julie Bulson.

 

Mark your calendar for Safe Church training to be held here at Westend on October 26 at 7 PM. Anyone who helps with Westend’s children and hasn’t had the training in the last three years should attend.

 

Costume jewelry is again being collected for MCFS. Feel free to clean out your jewelry box, and put donations in the box on the table near the mailboxes. Please do so by Thanksgiving.

  • Reserve October 13-14 for an overnight retreat at Hoekzema’s cottage in Cadillac. We will leave from church that Friday at 9 PM and return Saturday at 4 PM. Cost is $10.

  • We meet this evening, 6-8 PM. Join us for the lesson King Me! and examine the importance that a Christian foundation makes in today’s culture.

The Veenstra’s granddaughter, Nora, had successful surgery last week and is doing well. She has returned home.

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

Now that Westend has called Pastor Kory, and he has accepted the call, you may be wondering what comes next. October 1 will be his farewell service at Covenant CRC in Iowa. Soon after, the Plockmeyer family will head to Michigan and will live temporarily with Lauren’s parents in Holland. Pastor Kory’s installation service at Westend will be held October 22, and he will begin preaching here on October 29. Please remember to hold up the Plockmeyer family in your prayers through the many transitions in the upcoming weeks, and also Covenant CRC as they now face finding a new pastor.

 

The Cadet Counselors will meet briefly in the library this morning after the worship service.

 

The congregation is invited to Sunday Nights with Dan Kroeze. Rev Kroeze will lead discussion-style Bible studies beginning tonight and continuing October 1, 15, and 29, and November 12. Come to the fellowship center at 5:30, and bring a snack to pass if you wish. Childcare will be provided.

 

The Men’s Life Bible Study at New Beginnings Restaurant is meeting each Wednesday at 8 AM to study the book of Romans. Join us! Questions? Call Al.

 

Our first Westend Wednesday of the season is this Wednesday! Come for burgers and hot dogs served by our very own youth group, while we listen to oldies music and admire some great classic cars (if you have one, please bring it out for the evening). Yes, this is a fund-raiser for our youth group, and you know you’ll have fun!

 

Brian is looking for a few good grill masters this Wednesday. Sign up in back of church if you’re willing to help out.

 

A Beth Moore study on David will begin this Wednesday evening in the Café. Join us each Westend Wednesdays at 6:45 for an exciting journey to know King David, the man after God’s own heart. Let’s become women after God’s own heart.

 

The Ministry Directors will meet this Wednesday following our Community Dinner.

 

Volunteers are needed to set up, serve, and clean up at future Westend Wednesday Community Dinners. A sign up sheet is in the fellowship center.

 

The Thursday evening Ladies’ Bible Study begins at 6:30 on this Thursday, and will meet the 1st and 3rd Thursdays for six sessions. The topic will be the video-based study The Armor of God by Pricilla Schier.

The Search Committee held its final meeting on Thursday evening.  We are so thankful to the members of our Westend Church family for their encouragement and prayers over the past months.  It was a blessing!  We are also thankful for all who helped and participated in the Meet and Greet events for Pastor Kory and Lauren.  Whether you baked a dessert for the Dessert Social, supervised and played with children at the Play Date, set up tables and chairs, cleaned up the kitchen, or adjusted your schedule to attend an event, we sincerely appreciate it! Most of all, we are thankful to our Heavenly Father for answering our prayers by sending Pastor Kory to be our next pastor!

Today is our Sunday School kick-off in the fellowship center immediately following worship. Come for cookie decorating, crafts, and playing people Bingo! Kids of all ages are welcome to join the fun! Sunday School and Catechism classes begin next Sunday, September 17.

 

Sunday morning coffee news. Now you might wonder what kind of news would there be about Sunday morning coffee. Well, there will now be coffee offered before church. The first pot will be put in the large kitchen serving window so you can get a cup or top off your travel mug. There will be a few cookies available if you need a quick snack before the service. The Knit & Crochet group begins this Thursday at 9:30 AM. Anyone who likes to play with yarn is welcome to join on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays to make items for various causes.

We offer our condolences to Melita DeVries and the DeVries family in the death of their dear husband, father, and grandfather, Marv. A memorial service will be held today (Sunday, August 27) at 3:00 here at Westend, with an hour of visitation preceding.

 

Kristy Mulder was hospitalized last week with complications and infection following her appendectomy. She has returned home.

 

Gerald Miller had a partial knee replacement last week, and is scheduled to be home now.

At last Sunday’s congregational meeting, an overwhelming majority of votes were in favor of calling Rev Kory Plockmeyer to be our next Pastor. Over the next weeks, you are encouraged to pray for Kory and his wife Lauren as they seek God’s will for their future. You may wish to send a note of encouragement to them. The Christian Reformed Conference Grounds is excited to welcome the Allen family in concert this Saturday, August 26. Look for a pirate flag near the bathroom complex around noon. Bring your grill, food, beach toys, paddle boards, and sunscreen. There will be a bag toss tournament at 4 PM with prizes! Tryson Smallegan has finally been able to return home from the hospital! There will be many follow-up scans to be sure the shunt is operating well.

 

Chuck Tumbling’s surgery went well. He awaits test results to determine further treatment.

 

Phyllis VanHeest has completed a series of chemo and radiation treatments with encouraging results. She will have a CT scan in September to determine further treatment options. She appreciates the many prayers on her behalf.

Chuck Tumbling has surgery tomorrow for colon cancer, with possible follow up treatment as necessary.

 

Congratulations to Lois Kuiper and Dick Heys who were united in marriage on Friday. We wish them God’s blessing on their new home.

 

This week five of our GEMS counselors (Sheri Bustraan, Jen Byle, Deb Kok, Ruth Meringa, and Jane VandePol) will be driving to Dordt College for the GEMS conference. Please pray for their safety and inspiration this week.

 

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS

 

Everyone is invited to join the prayer group, which meets in the Café every Sunday morning at 9:15. Gather with us to give thanks to God, to pray for the service and the needs of our church, and any other concerns.

 

Our Search Committee continues to meet on Thursday evenings. Please pray for the committee and check your email on Thursdays for specific prayer requests.

 

On August 6, the Guatemala group will share stories and lunch after the worship service. Come to the fellowship center at 11:30 for sandwiches, fruit, and ice cream, followed by pictures from the mission trip.

 

A copy of your directory entry was in your mailbox. Is everything complete and correct? If so, please initial it and place it in the Secretary mailbox (located before the letter A). If not, please make the corrections and/or additions on the sheet and return it to the Secretary mailbox.

 

Back to school already? On Saturday, August 26, we will hold our backpack festival from 11 AM to 1 PM. Many volunteers will be needed and sign up sheets will be out in August. Many school supplies are also needed and appreciated – backpacks, paper, pencils, pens, markers, colored pencils, glue sticks and scissors. There have already been some back-to-school sales! Thank you for any donations!

 

Our prayer line (453-2288) is available to take your prayer requests. Just leave your request after the recorded message. Intercessors will monitor messages day and night and pray for you at any time.

 

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

 

Our Christian Education Committee is in need of new members. If you would like to volunteer, or if you have questions, please contact April.

 

Needed: A Sunday School teacher for the 6th-7th grade class, and Catechism teacher for the 11th-12th grade class. Contact Bethany.

 

Also needed are teachers for elementary age Sunday School classes, and teachers for Children’s Worship. Please contact Alisha.
