We would like to offer our deepest sympathies to Jean Near as her brother passed away Monday Morning.  Jean would appreciate phone calls or cards from her church family! 

Phyllis Lehrke was taken to St Mary’s on Monday where she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure and fluid in the chest.  She had a procedure to drain the fluid and has been feeling better.  She is expected to return to Edison this weekend.

Through some communication issues we are still 1 Service Deacon short.  The Service Deacons are responsible for equipping Westend to join God’s work of fixing what’s broken in this world.  They empower us to lives of service and perform acts of mercy and care on behalf of Westend.  Those who serve as Service Deacons are generally blessed with gifts of mercy, service, and compassion.

If you feel God calling you to fulfill this role, please contact Nichole in the office or Doug Stapley.

There will be no CEMC meeting in June!

Just a reminder: There will be no Children’s Worship for July or August.  Nursery will still be available.

Save the date! Sunday Sept. 26th we will be having a church picnic at Millennium Park to celebrate our 30th Anniversary!

Last week was CSI and we had such a great week!  We had around 100 kids come everyday to learn about rocks, weather and to worship!  We want to give a huge thank you to all of our wonderful volunteers who helped this week- we could not have done it without you!

Chuck Cheslek has been placed in hospice care.  He has been dealing with a heart condition and has been falling more frequently.  Please keep him in your prayers.

We would like to offer our deepest sympathies to Lois Blake as Ken passed away Wednesday afternoon. We pray for God’s peace and comfort for Lois and her family during this time.

Jean Near’s brother has been placed in hospice care.  Please keep both of them in your prayers.

Clarence Maat fell and broke a couple of fingers and received cuts to his hand.  He is now mending nicely while staying at his daughter’s house. He will be returning to Edison Manor within a week or two.

CSI begins tomorrow!  Please pray for the many volunteers who are involved in CSI this week, that they will be examples of Christ.  Please pray for the children who will be attending, that their hearts may receive the lessons with joy and wonderment.

Betty Cooper will celebrate her 99th Birthday on Tuesday June 8th! 

Our sympathies go out to the family of Eileen Stehouwer, who passed away last Saturday.  Please keep them in your prayers.

Please continue to pray for Steve Kooi as he struggles with the disease Scleroderma. Steve had tests and doctors appointments this past month.  The tests have shown that there is more advancement of scar tissue in the lungs. He also has been diagnosed with Pulmonary Hypertension in his lungs and Pulmonary Artery.  There is a new medication that he hopes to start very soon that helps control the advancement of scar tissue.

A note from Council: At our monthly meeting, Council decided to move forward by following recent CDC guidelines regarding masks and gathering.  Vaccinated individuals can go maskless and unvaccinated individuals should continue to wear a mask, while indoors.  Children 5-11 years old should also continue to wear a mask, while indoors.  We ask that social distancing guidelines continue to be followed when seating yourself in the sanctuary.

A note from the Treasurer:  After the Congregational meeting last week I wanted to reiterate that financially the changes that are being proposed for Pastor changes will be a savings to the budget that isn’t included in the current proposal.  Some of the savings will be used for pay raises due to increased responsibilities but after that has been completed there could be a substantial savings to the current staffing budget in future years.  Please let Nate Verbeek know if you have any further questions.  Email: Nathan.verbeek@sbcglobal.net

ATTENTION ALL FISHERMEN: The Calvinist Cadet Corps is hosting its eighteenth annual fishing tournament to raise funds to support its ministry – helping boys grow spiritually in all areas of life. The fishing tournament will be held on Saturday, June 5, 2021 at Gun Lake State Park in southwest Michigan. We are aware of the CDC’s updated recommendation to vaccinated adults this week and we rejoice in this progress!  Because our congregation includes a mix of adults and children, we will consider the advice of state and local health officials when it becomes available.  We will continue to monitor the situation, but would like to discuss this subject in person at our next meeting.

Please pray for Jeff Hawkins his dad has been at Mercy Health Lacks Cancer Center with serious kidney issues.  They believe this is being caused by treatments he has been receiving for bladder cancer.

Church Retreat is May 21-23 at the Christian Reformed Conference Grounds.  We will have Pastor Dan Kroeze as our guest preacher.  Come for the fabulous food, great games, and wonderful worship! Feel free to join us for the weekend or just come up for worship and dinner on Sunday!  If you have not registered yet, you may still do so online! www.westendcrc.org/retreat    If you are just coming for the day, please register if at all possible so we have a headcount for food

There will be no Children’s Ministry on May 30 due to Memorial Day weekend.  Nursery will still be available!

Burritos are back! This is a Christian Ed fundraiser you don’t want to miss.  Orders with payment may be placed in the Mata mailbox no later than May 16.  Pickup is June 2.  Extra order forms are located at the mailboxes.

Youth group hasn’t been able to do its normal fundraising this year, can you help us out?! We have someone who is willing to make a generous matching donation, so we are wondering if you would be willing to make a donation towards our mission trip to Colorado this year?  We are looking to raise a total of $8,000.  Please consider making a donation of any amount and that donation will be matched!  Donations can be put in the offering box or dropped off at the office.  Thank you!

Join us this upcoming Friday (5/14) as we go to AJ’s Fun Center for a night of go karts and mini golf.  We will meet at church at 6:30 and get back at 9:30 pm… or you can meet us at AJ’s at 7 & get picked up there at 9 pm.  Cost is $10.

COW is coming June 14-17!  Registration forms were sent out and are due at the end of the month!

GENERAL ANNOUNCEMENTS 

Reservations for the church Retreat weekend are due today!  Join us at the Christian Reformed Conference Grounds on beautiful Lake Michigan May 21-23.  Come for fabulous food, great games and wonderful worship!  Extra brochures are available at the Welcome Center!

We are planning on having the popular cereal walk game again at the church retreat, and we would love your help!  If you could donate a couple boxes of cereal so we can run this game, it would be really appreciated!  

This week Thursday, May 6, has been designated as the National Day of Prayer for our country.  You are encouraged to plan a time for prayer on that day or another time this week that is more convenient.  We will have the North Entrance of the church open from 7 AM to 7 PM on Thursday if you would like a quiet place to pray.  Look for a prayer guide in your email on Monday.

MISSING!  There are 2 clear and white bins missing from the café.  If you have them or know where they are, please return them to the café! 

Knit and Crochet group is looking for more people to join them!  They meet every other Thursday from 9:30am-11:30am in the Café.

Do you like playing cards?  The Café group is looking for more people to come play!  They meet every Wednesday from 1-3pm in the Café.

In your mailbox today is an order form for Trini’s famous wet burritos!  This is a Christian Ed fundraiser that you don’t want to miss.  If you’ve never been to Trini’s in Sparta, trust us, these burritos are fabulous!  Orders with payment may be placed in the Mata mailbox no later than May 16.  Pickup is June 2.  Extra order forms are at the Welcome Center. Barb Helmus is home and feeling a little sore but doing really well.  She should hear in the next couple days any test results from the procedure.

Please keep Dale and Willa VerBurg in your prayers.  Willa has lost quite a bit of strength in her legs and was really struggling to stand up and walk.  They are unable to figure out what is causing the weakness.  She is in rehab for 2 weeks in hopes that helps.  It is hard for Dale not having Willa home, he misses her.
