Bulletin 10-1-17

October 1, 2017

This morning our guest preacher is Rev Dan Ackerman. During the service we have the privilege of celebrating Communion, and witnessing the baptism of Josslyn Kate Marsh, daughter of Jennifer and DJ.

Next Sunday our guest preacher will be Seminarian Kayla Fik. During the service Benjamin Steven Mulder, son of Sam and Alec, will be baptized.

Our opportunities for giving will be for the Ministries Fund and World Renew Hurricane Relief. This special offering will help World Renew in their efforts to assist the many people who have been devastated by recent hurricanes in Texas, Florida, and Puerto Rico.

We wish a happy birthday to Elsie Heyboer who turns 80 this Tuesday.

Today our 11th and 12th grade students will help out with the K-5 Sunday School kids. All in K-5 and 11-12 grades please meet in the large Sunday School room after church.

It’s never too early to pick up Christmas gifts or décor for the holidays. The Christian Ed team is kicking off a Yankee Candle Sale! You can make your order two ways:

  • Check out a catalogue (a few are placed in the fellowship center) or the website yankeecandlefundraising.com, write down what you would like to order, including the item description, item number, and quantity, and place it with a check (made out to Westend) in April Myles’ mailbox. Please add $3 for shipping. Orders are due October 16 and will be delivered to church before Thanksgiving.
  • OR go straight to the website yankeecandlefundraising.com, enter the group number 99971829 and shop away! Online orders will incur taxes and full shipping charges, but credit and debit cards will be accepted and orders will ship to your home.

For anyone who is eager to shop online – the group number listed above will not be activated until October 1. Feel free to browse until then.

Feel free to share the website and group number with your friends and family!

This Wednesday is Westend Wednesday! Our dinner is a Christian Ed fundraiser featuring pizza, hot dogs, salad, and dessert.

Future dates and menus are:

October 18 – ham dinner with all the sides

November 1 – International Potluck

Sign up sheets are in the fellowship center for dinner helpers, and for the potluck.

The Ladies’ Thursday afternoon Bible study will begin this week at 1:30 in the Café. Pastor Bob will review our past lessons. Questions? Call Alma.

Do you love kids and want to help young families continue meeting? A small group is looking for volunteers to watch their kids (infant – 5 years) in the nursery the first Thursday of each month. Time is 5:30-8:00 and includes dinner! If you are willing to help, please contact Jennifer VanStrien.

Pick-up basketball starts Saturday, October 14. We play at West Side’s gym 8-10 AM most Saturdays. Anyone middle school and up is welcome. There is a facebook group for weekly communication. If interested, contact Jamison Worst.

Fall = Fun! Westend Fall Fest Lite is happening this year at Ben and Judy Meyer’s home this Saturday at 6 PM. Ben will have the cider mill running, as well as the tractor for hay rides. We’ll also have store-bought cider, Moelker’s donuts, a campfire, and snacks. Bring a Frisbee or outdoor game if you’d like, or just hang out by the fire and enjoy family fun and fall revelry!

Save the date. Flu shots will be available in the Café on October 11, 10-11 AM.

Costume jewelry is being collected for MCFS. Feel free to clean out your jewelry box, and put donations in the box on the table near the mailboxes. Please do so by Thanksgiving.

  • We meet this afternoon at 3:45.

  • October 13-14 will be our overnight retreat at Hoekzema’s cottage in Cadillac. We will leave from church that Friday at 7 PM and return Saturday at 4 PM. Cost is $10.

  • We meet this evening, 6-8 PM.

  • Save October 28 for our next activity.

All are invited to a concert benefiting the Christian Rest Home, held here at Westend next Sunday at 7:45 PM, featuring the Voices of Victory Quartet and the Covenant Christian High School Concert Choir.
