Bulletin 9-17-17

September 17, 2017

This morning our guest preacher is Wally Harrison. His message, The Party is Here, is from Luke 15:11-32.

Next Sunday our guest preacher is Andrea Bult. During the service Ruby Jean Swinkels, daughter of Karissa and Reuben, will be baptized.

Our opportunities for giving will be for the Ministries Fund and Christian Education.

The Veenstra’s granddaughter, Nora, had successful surgery last week and is doing well. She has returned home.

Congratulations to Curt Critchlow and Amber Medlin, who were married in our church yesterday. May God bless this new family.

Now that Westend has called Pastor Kory, and he has accepted the call, you may be wondering what comes next. October 1 will be his farewell service at Covenant CRC in Iowa. Soon after, the Plockmeyer family will head to Michigan and will live temporarily with Lauren’s parents in Holland. Pastor Kory’s installation service at Westend will be held October 22, and he will begin preaching here on October 29. Please remember to hold up the Plockmeyer family in your prayers through the many transitions in the upcoming weeks, and also Covenant CRC as they now face finding a new pastor.

The Cadet Counselors will meet briefly in the library this morning after the worship service.

The congregation is invited to Sunday Nights with Dan Kroeze. Rev Kroeze will lead discussion-style Bible studies beginning tonight and continuing October 1, 15, and 29, and November 12. Come to the fellowship center at 5:30, and bring a snack to pass if you wish. Childcare will be provided.

The Men’s Life Bible Study at New Beginnings Restaurant is meeting each Wednesday at 8 AM to study the book of Romans. Join us! Questions? Call Al.

Our first Westend Wednesday of the season is this Wednesday! Come for burgers and hot dogs served by our very own youth group, while we listen to oldies music and admire some great classic cars (if you have one, please bring it out for the evening). Yes, this is a fund-raiser for our youth group, and you know you’ll have fun!

Brian is looking for a few good grill masters this Wednesday. Sign up in back of church if you’re willing to help out.

A Beth Moore study on David will begin this Wednesday evening in the Café. Join us each Westend Wednesdays at 6:45 for an exciting journey to know King David, the man after God’s own heart. Let’s become women after God’s own heart.

The Ministry Directors will meet this Wednesday following our Community Dinner.

Volunteers are needed to set up, serve, and clean up at future Westend Wednesday Community Dinners. A sign up sheet is in the fellowship center.

The Thursday evening Ladies’ Bible Study begins at 6:30 on this Thursday, and will meet the 1st and 3rd Thursdays for six sessions. The topic will be the video-based study The Armor of God by Pricilla Schier.

The Emergency Medical Team asks that anyone with a medical or first aid background contact Julie Bulson.

The Cadets are going on a camp out September 29-30. Please have your boys at church that Friday at 5 PM. Don’t forget to turn in your permission slip.

Fall = Fun! Westend Fall Fest LITE is happening this year at Ben and Judy Meyer’s home on Saturday, October 7, at 6 PM. Ben will have the cider mill running, as well as hay rides. We’ll also have store-bought cider, Moelker’s donuts, a campfire, and snacks. Bring a frisbee or outdoor game if you’d like, or just hang out by the fire and enjoy family fun and fall revelry!

Save the date. Flu shots will be available in the Café on October 11, 10-11 AM.

Mark your calendar for Safe Church training to be held here at Westend on October 26 at 7 PM. Anyone who helps with Westend’s children and hasn’t had the training in the last 3 years should attend.

Costume jewelry is again being collected for MCFS. Feel free to clean out your jewelry box, and put donations in the box on the table near the mailboxes. Please do so by Thanksgiving.

  • We meet this afternoon 3:45-5:30. Join us for some get-to-know-you games and the Bible lesson #iwokeuplikethis

  • Reserve October 13-14 for an overnight retreat at Hoekzema’s cottage in Cadillac.

  • Volunteers are still needed for our 50’s dinner this Wednesday. Please contact Brian for a work shift if you’re willing to help out.

  • Our next lesson will be September 24, 6-8 PM. Join us for the lesson King Me! and examine the importance that a Christian foundation makes in today’s culture.

The Search Committee held its final meeting on Thursday evening.  We are so thankful to the members of our Westend Church family for their encouragement and prayers over the past months.  It was a blessing!  We are also thankful for all who helped and participated in the Meet and Greet events for Pastor Kory and Lauren.  Whether you baked a dessert for the Dessert Social, supervised and played with children at the Play Date, set up tables and chairs, cleaned up the kitchen, or adjusted your schedule to attend an event, we sincerely appreciate it! Most of all, we are thankful to our Heavenly Father for answering our prayers by sending Pastor Kory to be our next pastor!

Don’t forget that ArtPrize begins September 20, and Karen Winegar’s cross-stitch piece Revelation, which depicts our front stained glass window, will be on display in Arnie’s Restaurant.

Reserve September 24 for a hymnsing to benefit MCFS. The hymnsing will be held at Baldwin St CRC at 7:30 PM, and will be led by Cliff Doornbos and many musicians. The Hope Heralds will again bring their wonderful music.

A dinner to benefit MCFS will be held October 9 at Hillcrest CRC in Hudsonville. Call Cliff or Huddy if you would like to attend.
